Greetings to all and welcome to our first 3 day ride of 2019. WHAT!!!!! 3 day? You said it was going to be a 4 day ride. Yes I did, and no, it isn’t. Originally at our ride meeting, it was requested to add the cabins at Alamo, Nevada as one of our night stops. That would take a minimum of 4 days to complete this trip. Unfortunately, after talking with the manager of Windmill Ridge in Alamo, they didn’t think they would be in business in 2019. The owners are going to donate the land and the cabins to the Girl Scouts. Too bad for us, very good for them. Now back to the 3 day ride. The dates of this ride will be March 29th, Friday, to March 31st, Sunday.
We will all gather on the west side of US 101 @ 166 east at 7:00am, ride brief at 7:15 and kickstands up at 7:30. We will travel east on 166 until we make a stop at Maricopa (78 miles) for a butt/gas break. Continue on the 166 to Old River Road, where we will make a turn (only one direction to turn). After we get on this said road, we will zigzag across the county until we hit Comanche Road near the town of Arvin. We will stay on Comanche north bound until we run into SR 178, were we will head east to Lake Isabella (82 miles). At Lake Isabella, we will dine at the Dam Korner Café, then gas up for our next leg of the trip.
Continuing east on the 178 until we come to SR 14, then heading north. The 14 merges with the 395 north until we stop for a butt/gas stop at Olancha.(84 miles) From Olancha, we will take SR 190 east into Death Valley. After passing Stovepipe Wells (maybe an ice cream stop), we will turn north on Scotty’s Castle Road, then east on Daylight Pass Road an stay true until we hit Beatty.(109 miles)
At Beatty, we will be staying at Stagecoach Inn Friday and Saturday nights. There # is 775-553-2419 for reservations. I blocked off 12 rooms for the price of $65/night plus tax, which came to $70.85/night. When you call and make your reservation, tell them you are with the SANTA MARIA HOG. On Saturday, there are 2 different routes, so we will discuss them to see which route we will take. Each route includes Furnace Creek, Zabriskie Point, Dantes View, Badwater, Artists Palette and Artists Drive. For lunch, we will dine at the Amagosa Café at Death Valley Junction. I did call them and yes, they are still open. They also make pizzas now.
I’ve been leading this ride for the past 18 years and have never grown tired of this beautiful, vast terrain. If you have never been to Death Valley, or are new to the chapter and have never experienced a 3 day chapter ride, you need to do yourself a favor, and join us. Please call me (Moe) at 805-266-4574 if you have any questions.Moe
