Santa Margarita Park will be our final destination/termination point

On Saturday, May 11th, I will be leading the group on a ride to the Penny Bar in McKittrick for lunch. The Penny Bar is a VERY unique place! It has been described as being in a class of its own, a great little dive to stop in and eat in a blink-and-you`ll-miss-it town. The bar is literally covered in pennies. Actually, the over one million pennies are glued to everything, including the floor, the walls, pool table, and the TV! Everywhere! The food is pretty good and the service has always been great. If you have never been, you ought to come along and check it out. On the rides I lead this year I am trying to freshen them up by doing the "established" route in the opposite direction. Tricky huh? So, I figure we`ll meet at the shop at 9:30 or so, have the pre-briefing at 9:45, and hit the road at 10:00. We will go out Highway 166 to the park in New Cuyama to possibly shed some gear and use the restroom. We will then go on to Maricopa and Highway 33 North, stopping in Taft to refuel. We will continue heading north through beautiful Taft and what seems like thousands of oil rigs till we reach Highway 58 and the town of McKittrick for lunch.

After what I`m sure will be a tasty lunch we will get on the 58 and head towards Santa Margarita. We will stop at the park in Santa Margarita to say our goodbyes and this will be the official termination point for this ride. Please be sure to sign-up so I know how many tables we need to get. Hopefully they will put us in the room behind the bar again.

If you have any questions or concerns, call me.

Riding the Sierra’s HOG Tour begins in Bakersfield, CA where your journey begins. Bakersfield has an elevation of 495’ above sea level.

As you roll along scenic roads west of the Sierra Mountain range, you climb in elevation as you enjoy the sites along the winding roads. You will pass through some of the old gold rush towns from the late 1840’s. Over 750,000 pounds of gold was extracted from 1848 to 1855. Remnants of the old mines and buildings are still visible today.

Great scenery along with the gold rush history will be just a portion of the highlights of this HOG Tour. After you depart Bakersfield, nightly stops along this ride will be in Fresno, Jamestown and ending in Sacramento. Come along for the ride as we make history with another HOG riding event.

The return trip to New Cuyama will be our termination point for this ride.

On Saturday, June 15th, 2019, I will be leading us on our annual summer trek up to Pine Mountain Club. We`ll meet at Pappy's Restaurant on Betteravia and have a pre-ride briefing at TBD and head out at TBD. We will take Highway 166 to New Cuyama and make a stop there to shed some clothes and use the restrooms. We will then continue east, turning onto Highway 33 and down to Ventucopa stopping at "the Place". This cool little café/bar offers a nice breakfast and lunch and caters to the motorcycle crowd on the weekends. Good food and friendly staff.

After eating, we`ll continue south on Highway 33 till we get to Lockwood Valley Road where we make a left and head on up through the Lockwood Valley to Pine Mountain Club. This road is fun to ride, having a lot of turns, twisties, and terrific scenery to keep your brain occupied! Once we get to Pine Mountain Club, we will stop for gas and maybe something to drink from the nearby store. After our stop, we`ll head out of town heading north on the Cerro Noroeste Road. This road is also a lot of fun with the same kind of cornering, twisties, and spectacular scenery as before. We will eventually hit Highway 166 again. Taking a left, we`ll go to our final stop at Patti`s favorite restroom in New Cuyama to say our goodbyes, etc.

The mileage totals are approximately 125 miles up to Pine Mountain Club and 100 miles back to Santa Maria. It`s a fun little ride and we hope you will join us!

Are you a new member to the Santa Maria Harley Owners Group?  If so this is your opportunity to 'get your feet wet' and go on a short orientation ride with other new members and Chapter Road Captains.  This will give the Road Captains the opportunity to talk to you about how Chapter Rides are set up and the safety aspects we try to provide on Chapter rides.

Purpose of the orientation: To introduce SMHOG standard operating procedures, safety requirements, group integrity, hand signals and the SMHOG culture to “Ride and have Fun” using proven techniques to manage group rides.

We will provide some general information about different aspects of the Chapter; rides and events; Risk Management; general ride information such as pre-ride briefing, arrival times, departure locations, and more; riding formations; lane changing; emergency/accident information; becoming a Road Captain and that process; communication and some one-on-one time with Chapter Road Captains.  After the orientation introduction we will head off on a short ride to a lunch spot.

So come on out and join us and get to know your Chapter!  We hope to see you in attendance for this ride/event if you are a new member.  If you need more information please contact me at PhilipRietz@comcast.net, Ted Kapner at me@tedkapner.com, or Richard Oberly at rgodancin4life@gmail.com

We had such a good time on this ride in 2018 I decided to do it again.  So take a lunch ride with me to a nice little, somewhat outdated decor seafood restaurant in Morro Bay right on the docks.  We will leave Pappy's after our pre-ride briefing and head north on Highway 101 and we will travel 17.5 miles to Exit 187A / Grand Avenue in Arroyo Grande.  We will turn right and travel through town on E. Branch Street to Corbett Canyon Road and travel approximately 1.3 miles and pickup Highway 227 / Carpenter Canyon Road.

We will travel on Highway 227 through wine country and Edna Valley to Tank Farm Road (9.5 miles) and turn left onto Tank Farm Road and travel west and turn right onto S. Higuera Street (1.8 miles).  We will travel a short distance and turn left onto Prado Road and then get on Highway 101 and travel north for 18.5 miles to Exit 219 / Highway 41 west.

Traveling west on Highway 41 we will head towards Morro Bay (16.2 miles) and just before the Highway 1 on ramps we will turn left onto Main Street and travel south for .9 miles until we come up to the cross street of Beach Street.  We will turn right and travel down towards the Bay making a right turn at the bottom of the hill and travel a short distance to our destination, Tognazzini's Dockside Restaurant.  Total mileage: 67.2 miles

    http://www.morrobaydockside.com/

They have a wide variety of seafood platters to choose from.  This will be our termination point for this ride. You may stay in the Morro Bay area or travel back to the Santa Maria area with me.

Since we have a large group for this ride I am going to suggest we pal up and break into small groups and go to the five different restaurants available to us.  There are actually three Dockside Restaurants next to each other.  Dockside, Dockside Too, and Dockside 3.  Also just south of Dockside in the same parking lot area is the Harbor Hut and also a little beyond that is the Great American Fish Company Restaurant so the choice is yours!

I am not making reservations at any of these great restaurants so the choice will be yours upon arrival as the Dockside restaurants are not taking reservations for the Labor Day weekend.

Cold Spring Tavern is the termination point of the ride

Leaving the parking lot we will turn left on Betteravia Road and head east. Staying on Betteravia Road we will travel to Foxen Canyon Road. We will then turn left on Foxen Canyon Road and travel through wine country and several vineyards until we come to Highway 154 where we will turn left being careful when we cross traffic. Staying on 154 we will continue east until Foxen Canyon Road and turn right and then make an immediate right onto Ballard Canyon Road.  There we will go single file going through some more vineyards with lots of twisties and hills but we will do so at a slow pace as this road can get narrow in some areas.  Coming into Solvang we will make a left turn at the stop light at Highway 246 and travel east towards Highway 154. Once on 154 we will travel south until we come to Stagecoach Road. We will make a left hand turn onto Stagecoach and again we will fall into single file formation until we come to the Tavern. Parking is sometimes limited so park where you are comfortable to do so.

This is the termination point of the ride

Please let me know if you are going by signing up and if you cannot make the ride please let me know as I have made reservations with the restaurant. Contact me at (805) 698-6353 if you have any questions.
